This event was originally planned for 7 & 8 February 2020, but is being re-arranged - new dates will be announced later in 2019.

A lesser know one act opera by a giant of French Romantic music, The Yellow Princess (La Princesse Jaune) celebrates the massive impact of Japanese culture on western Europe during the 1870s.

The music is light and experimental for its time, playing elegantly on oriental scales to appeal to the public taste of the day.

A young student, Kornelis, is fascinated by all things Japanese and obsessively devoted to a portrait of a Japanese girl - an obsession which blinds him to his cousin Lena and her unrequired love for him. After much soul-searching, and in the course of a fantastical opium-enhanced dream, he realises at last that he is in love with Lena.

Our studio production has a contemporary setting, liberally scattered with references to cotemporary Japanese culture, from manga to cosplay. Conducted by Peter Ford, two outstanding young singers - Bertie Yates, and Lucy Mellors - perform the two leading roles.
